A Message from the Mountaintop

A Message from the Mountaintop

📝 Summary

Leen and three friends find a mysterious note promising an answer at the mountaintop, and as they help one another climb, they discover that the answer is the strength they have together.

📖 Story

In a small village at the foot of a high mountain lived a ten-year-old girl named Leen. Leen loved walking among the rocks and collecting colorful stones, and every morning she looked out her window at the distant mountaintop that sometimes disappeared into the clouds, wondering, "What's up there? And who can reach it?"

One spring day, as Leen was walking near the spring with her three friends, cheerful Adam, calm Sama, and Tariq, who loved maps, she spotted something white under a round stone. She lifted the stone and found a small folded paper tied with a red string. She opened it carefully and read aloud: "Whoever reaches the top will find the answer." The friends looked at each other in surprise. "What answer? To what question?" asked Adam. "Maybe it's a message from a traveler long ago!" said Sama.

The friends went home and told their families about the message. Leen's grandfather laughed. "That's a beautiful mountain, and the villagers know the path to the top, but it takes preparation and patience. If you want to climb, I'll go with you as far as the last resting place, and then you can finish the easy part on your own." The children were overjoyed and agreed to set off on Friday morning.

The friends spent the next days getting ready. Tariq drew a map of the path as Grandfather described it, marking the spring, the big trees, and the rock shaped like a camel's head. Sama packed a small bag with bandages, tissues, and sun hats. Adam volunteered to carry the food, laughing, "I'm in charge of the most important thing on the trip: the sandwiches!" Leen carried a big bottle of water and kept the little message in her pocket. The night before the trip, Leen couldn't fall asleep quickly. She imagined the mountaintop and the unknown answer, wondering: is it a treasure? An old secret? Another message? Then she smiled and told herself, "Whatever the answer is, the trip with my friends will be the best part."

On Friday morning, the children set off with Grandfather before the sun grew hot. At first the path was easy, winding between blossoming almond trees with birds singing above. But the higher they climbed, the narrower the trail became, the bigger the rocks, and the stronger the wind. At the last resting place, Grandfather sat on a rock and said, "From here the path is clear, and the white marks on the rocks will guide you. Walk together, and don't leave anyone behind. I'll wait for you here." Then he looked into their eyes one by one and added, "And remember: if one of you gets tired, everyone stops. The top won't run away, but a tired friend needs you right then." The children nodded, said goodbye to Grandfather, and began climbing in a single line.

The real climb began. The wind whistled between the rocks, tossing Leen's hair and almost blowing Adam's hat away. Soon Adam stopped and said, panting, "I'm so tired. The bag is heavy, and my legs hurt." Leen looked at him and said, "Give me some of the sandwiches; I'll carry them with you." Tariq took another share, and Adam's bag became light. He smiled. "Thank you, friends. Now I can keep going!"

A little farther on, they reached a difficult rocky slope. Sama was afraid. "I can't climb these rocks. I'm scared I'll slip." Tariq came close and said calmly, "Look, Sama, there are little steps in the rock, like a ladder. Put your foot here, then here. I'll be in front of you, and Leen will be behind you." Leen held out her hand to Sama, and Sama climbed slowly, step by step, until she reached the top and shouted happily, "I did it!"

Halfway up, everyone felt very thirsty, but they discovered that Tariq's water bottle had spilled in his bag. Leen said at once, "No problem. I have enough water for all of us if we share it wisely." Each of them took a few sips, and they saved a little for the way down. "If it weren't for you, Leen, we'd have had to turn back here," said Tariq. "And if it weren't for you, Tariq, we'd have lost our way without your map," said Leen.

Whenever one of them got tired, the others encouraged them. Adam told funny jokes to make them forget their tiredness, Sama sang the old village song, Tariq said, "Only three more white marks!" and Leen said, "We're together, and we'll get there together." The clouds came closer and closer until they were walking among soft white threads of mist. Leen felt small cold drops on her face and laughed. "The cloud is washing our faces!" Adam reached out as if to grab a piece of cloud, and Tariq said that clouds are just tiny drops of water hanging in the air. Everyone was amazed by this lovely fact.

At last, after a long climb, the four friends reached the top. The sun was rising between the distant peaks, painting the sky orange and pink, and the clouds lay below them like a great white sea. They stood silent at the beauty of it, then Adam shouted, "We're above the clouds!" Everyone laughed and hugged.

Leen looked around for the answer the message had promised. Among the rocks she found a small metal box. She opened it with trembling hands and found inside a small round mirror, and beneath it a wooden board with the words: "True strength lives in you when you work together." Leen held up the mirror, and the four friends saw their faces in it together, tired but happy and smiling.

"So this is the answer!" said Sama. "We are the answer!" "If each of us had climbed alone, none of us would have made it," said Tariq. "I would have gotten lost, Sama would have been afraid, Adam would have gotten tired, and Leen would have been thirsty." Adam laughed. "And I would have eaten all the sandwiches by myself!" They sat and ate together, gazing at the wonderful view.

Then Sama sat looking into the mirror for a long time. "You know," she said, "when I was scared at the rocks, I didn't believe I could do it. But Leen's hand and Tariq's words made me feel stronger." "And I thought I was the weakest because I got tired first," said Adam, "but you didn't leave me." "Each of us was strong at one moment and weak at another," said Tariq, "and the others were there." Then they were quiet for a while, watching the sun rise higher.

Before going down, the friends decided to leave the box where it was for whoever came after them. Leen wrote a new note: "We got here together, and we found the answer. Enjoy the journey!" and placed it beside the mirror. Then they climbed down carefully. At the resting place they found Grandfather waiting with a smile, and they told him everything. "I'm the one who left that message, many years ago," said Grandfather, "when I was a young man and climbed with my friends."

Back in the village, Leen hung the old note with the red string on her bedroom wall and wrote her three friends' names beneath it in beautiful handwriting. Whenever she faced something hard at school or at home, she looked at it, remembered the mountaintop, and told herself, "I'm not alone."

The friends returned to the village seeing themselves in a new way. They had learned that each of us has a special strength, but the greatest strength appears when we cooperate, help one another, and share what we have. The high peaks are not reached by the fastest or the strongest, but by those who walk with their friends and reach out a hand to anyone who needs it.
