Jamil Helps Make the Bread

Jamil Helps Make the Bread
It is Friday. Dad is making bread.
"Can I help?" asks Jamil.
"Yes, please," says Dad. "Many hands make light work."

First, Jamil washes his hands. Scrub, scrub, scrub.
Then Dad gives him the flour. Jamil pours it in the bowl. Pour, pour, pour. A little white cloud puffs up! Jamil laughs.

Dad adds warm water. Jamil stirs with a big spoon. Stir, stir, stir.
Now it is dough. Soft, squishy dough.

"Now we push," says Dad.
Push, fold, turn. Push, fold, turn.
Jamil's arms get tired. But he keeps going. Push, fold, turn.

They cover the dough with a cloth. "Now it sleeps and grows," says Dad.
While they wait, Jamil helps wipe the table. Wipe, wipe, wipe.
He puts the spoon in the sink. He sweeps the flour from the floor.

The dough is big and round now. Dad shapes it into small loaves.
Into the hot oven they go. Only Dad touches the oven.

Soon the house smells warm and lovely.
Dad takes out the bread. Golden and puffy!

At lunch, Mum takes a bite. "Mmm! Who made this?"
"Dad and me!" says Jamil proudly.
"Thank you, helper," says Mum. And Jamil feels as warm as the bread.
