Omar, Noah and Zaatar's Rainbow Kite

Omar, Noah and Zaatar's Rainbow Kite
Omar and his cousin Noah ran onto the beach with a brand-new kite. Flap-flap-flap! A green parrot landed right on top of it.

"Squawk! I am Zaatar, the word-collecting parrot! Before this kite can fly, you must learn its colours in Arabic. That is the rule of the sky!"

"Is that a real rule?" asked Noah.
"It is now," said Zaatar, and winked.

He tapped the top stripe with his beak. "This one is أحمر, ahmar, red. Red like a tomato. Red like my cheeks when I sing in the bath!"

"Ahmar!" laughed the boys. Can you say it too? Ahmar!

"Next, أصفر, asfar, yellow, like the sun. Look up, but don't stare!"
"Asfar!"

"أزرق, azraq, blue, like the sea. Splish, splash!"
Noah dipped his toes in the water. "Azraq!"

"أخضر, akhdar, green, like the palm trees. And like ME!" Zaatar spun around to show off his feathers.
"Akhdar!"

"The tail is أبيض, abyad, white, like the clouds, and أسود, aswad, black, like the night."
"Abyad and aswad!"

Then Zaatar taught them his colour chant. Clap along!

Ahmar, asfar, up we go,
Azraq sea and sand below,
Akhdar palm and abyad cloud,
Aswad night, now shout it loud!

The boys tried to fly the kite. Whoosh... bump. It fell.
They tried again. Whoosh... flop. It fell again.
Noah stamped his foot. "This kite doesn't work!"

"Squawk! Kites are like words," said Zaatar. "You don't learn them on the first try. You try together."

So Omar held the string, Noah ran, and Zaatar flapped behind to make a little breeze. On the third try, WHOOSH! The kite rose high, high, high into the sky.

"Ahmar! Asfar! Azraq! Akhdar! Abyad! Aswad!" shouted the boys, pointing at every stripe.

A little girl nearby held up her bucket. "برتقالي, burtuqali! Orange!"

"A bonus word!" squawked Zaatar. "Into the bag!"

That evening the sky turned pink and gold. "What was the best colour today?" asked Omar's grandpa.

Noah thought. "The colour of patience," he said. "Because we kept trying, and the kite flew."

Words we learned:
أحمر — ahmar — red
أصفر — asfar — yellow
أزرق — azraq — blue
أخضر — akhdar — green
أبيض — abyad — white
أسود — aswad — black
برتقالي — burtuqali — orange

Let's practice:
1. Match the colour to the thing: أزرق / أصفر / أخضر → the sun / the sea / a palm tree
2. Fill in the missing word: Zaatar the parrot is _____ (akhdar).
3. Say it aloud and clap: ahmar, asfar, azraq, akhdar!
4. Find and circle the word أحمر: أزرق — أحمر — أسود — أحمر — أبيض

Answers: 1) أزرق = the sea, أصفر = the sun, أخضر = a palm tree. 2) أخضر (green). 4) The 2nd and 4th words.
