The Wise Tortoise and the Key to the Spring

The Wise Tortoise and the Key to the Spring

📝 Summary

When the forest spring dries up, the swift gazelle and the clever monkey are too proud to listen, and the calm tortoise brings the water back for everyone through patience and wisdom.

📖 Story

Once upon a time, in a faraway green forest, there was a clear spring from which all the animals drank. The water came out from between the rocks, cool and sweet. Flowers and grasses grew around it, and birds sang on the branches above.

In the forest there was a swift gazelle who was proud of his speed and said, "No one in the forest is faster than me!" There was a clever monkey who was proud of his cleverness and said, "No one in the forest is cleverer than me!" And there was an old, calm tortoise who walked slowly and was proud of nothing.

One morning the animals came to drink and found that the spring had dried up! Not a single drop of water. The animals were sad, the birds grew thirsty, and the flowers wilted.

The gazelle said, "I'll run through the whole forest and look for another spring!" And he set off running like the wind, east and west, north and south, until he was exhausted. He came back in the evening, panting, and said, "I couldn't find water anywhere."

The monkey said, "I'll solve the problem with my cleverness!" He started jumping on the rocks, hitting them with a stick and shouting, "Come out, water! Come out!" The water didn't come out, and the monkey grew tired and sat down, sad.

The tortoise had been watching them in silence. Then she said calmly, "My friends, water doesn't just disappear like this. Something must be blocking its way. Let's walk up the spring's channel to the top of the mountain and look."

The gazelle laughed and said, "You're far too slow! You'll get there in a week!" The monkey laughed and said, "And what does an old tortoise know?" The tortoise didn't get angry. She smiled and began to walk, step by step.

The tortoise walked all day and all night. She looked carefully at every stone and every crack in the ground. In the morning she reached the top of the mountain and saw something amazing: a big rock had fallen from the mountain and blocked the mouth of the spring, so the water was collecting behind it with nowhere to go!

The tortoise couldn't move the rock by herself. So she called out as loudly as she could, "My friends! Come! I've found the key to the spring!" A sparrow heard her and flew to the gazelle, the monkey and the elephant to tell them.

The gazelle came with his speed, the monkey came leaping, and the big elephant came with his heavy steps. The tortoise said, "This rock is what has trapped the water. Elephant, push it with your strength. Monkey, put the stick under it with your cleverness. And gazelle, run down quickly and tell the animals to keep away from the water's path."

So each one did what he was good at. The monkey placed the stick, and the elephant pushed. The rock moved a little... then a little more... then it rolled away! The water rushed out clear, singing between the rocks, gurgle, gurgle, until it reached the old spring.

The animals were overjoyed. They drank until they were no longer thirsty, the birds began to sing again, and the flowers lifted their heads once more.

The gazelle came to the tortoise, lowered his head and said, "Forgive me, Auntie. I was fast, but I wasn't patient." The monkey said, "And I thought I was the cleverest of all. Now I know that wisdom means listening before speaking."

That night the animals sat around the spring in the moonlight. The elephant said, "If I'd gone on my own, I wouldn't have known where the rock was." The monkey said, "And if I'd known where it was, I couldn't have moved it." The gazelle said, "And without my speed, the animals wouldn't have moved away from the water in time." Everyone laughed, and they knew they had succeeded because they had worked together.

The tortoise laughed and said, "My children, each of us has a gift. Speed is good, cleverness is good, and strength is good. But all of them need patience, cooperation and humility."

From that day on, the animals called the tortoise "the Guardian of the Spring", and whenever they had a problem they came to ask her advice. And everyone in the forest lived happily, drinking from the clear spring and remembering that humility is the key to wisdom.
